The fishing in the West Kootenays is legendary. The Columbia River, perhaps the best kept secret in the sport, offers the finest rainbow trout river fishing available. In February of 2004, a world record 23 pound river rainbow was caught in the Columbia a half hour away from our condominiums. Walleye fishing presents another challenge, in the same river! Just one hour away is Kootenay Lake, with its fabled Gerrard Rainbows, the largest species of Rainbow Trout in the world. Kokanee, a land-locked salmon species abound in the clear, fresh waters of Kootenay Lake. For guided and chartered fishing tours contact

Rossland & area provides trails for everyone, from technically challenging to gently sloping rides. The trail system, which radiates from town, winds through the forest providing shaded riding. Wagon roads, rail grades and pack trails left over from Rossland’s mining days have resulted in hundreds of kilometres of trails. A favourite is the historic Dewdney Trail, built in 1865 to connect the lower mainland with the gold fields near Fort Steele. The Dewdney Trail in the Rossland area is now a part of the famous Trans-Canada Trail. Also try the Red Mountain Resort Bike Park located at the base of Granite Mountain. Open weekends June to September. Ride the Silverlode chair up and bike down. Little wonder Rossland is called the Mountain Biking Capital of Canada.
Many of Rossland’s mountain biking trails provide terrific hiking too. The Rail grade makes for a pleasant walking experience, with more vigorous walks on the mountain. Try the challenging Seven Summits trail for breath taking mountain scenery and one of a kind adventure. Day hikes, from 4 to 8 hours are available throughout the area. More hiking information is available at: www.rosslandtrails.ca; or: www.rosslandmtadventures.com or call 250-362-5666.
